Isn’t it annoying don’t you think

In which things are ironic, don’t you think?

Alanis Morisette in Ironic

Time to feel old, because ‘Ironic’ by former Canadian God Alanis Morissette is about to turn twenty years old. Even though it is a song about misfortune rather than irony (as I’m sure it is aware to most people) it’s at least a great song about annoyances in life.

To celebrate I’m going to break out the songwriting handbook and have a stab at rewriting the lyrics. My rhymes and phrasings may be more Sondheim and Starkey but when has that ever stopped anyone?

So, to the tune of Ironic…Annoyance.

A young man turned thirty-five
He wants a nice house but it’s too dear
It’s a huge head on your draft beer
It’s a small fries when you ordered a large
And isn’t it annoying… don’t you think

It’s like rain on any given day
It’s a free pen when you’ve nothing to write
It’s the bad advice that get’s spread on the net
Who would’ve thought… it figures

Mr. Play It Safe was afraid to try
Every chance at love had said goodbye
So when he tried once more to take that chance
The friendzone block made him think
“Well isn’t this nice…”
And isn’t it Annoying… don’t you think

It’s like rain on the plains in Spain
It’s a free ride going the wrong way
It’s the good advice that you just didn’t want
Who would’ve thought… it figures

Well life has a funny way of sneaking up on you
When you think everything’s okay and everything’s going right
And life has a funny way of screwing you over when
You think everything’s gone right and everything blows up
In your face

A traffic jam when nobody’s crashed
A no-smoking sign that people ignore
It’s like ten thousand spoons when you have no room for more than twenty, tops
It’s meeting the girl of my dreams
And then finding she supports Trump
And isn’t it annoying…don’t you think
A little too annoying…and, yeah, I really do think…

It’s like diarrhea on your wedding day
It’s a shared ride when you’re the last drop
It’s the life advice from the family mess up
Who would’ve thought… it figures

Life has a funny way of sneaking up on you
Life has a funny, funny way of annoying you

…When all you need is a knife might not be ironic, but it is unfortunate. Add your own verse, stanza, or story of badly-timed annoyance to Alanis Morissette’s classic.

Ah, so you worked out the riddle. You just needed to use dwarfish and the doors to Geek Ergo Sum opened. Or perhaps you just used Google. Either way you are here, on my little corner of the Internet.
