If what we write is a reflection of ourselves, then what does this site say about me? Do I have a digital reflection in all the bits and bytes that can somehow be reconstructed to create an artificial replicant? Wouldn’t that be cool.
Some may say that this would be quite scary, and enough reason to shut down the internet lest Skynet develop my personality, but what about this site? Does my blog name, theme choice, design, bio, posts say about me?
Firstly the title, it is a corruption of the Latin Cognito Ergo Sum (I think therefore I am). Therefore it’s meant to be I geek therefore I am, although I’ve never taken a Latin lesson in my life so my usage is almost certainly wrong. Then again I don’t care about language rules and restrictions. I’m happy that I have English as my language because it is so flexible with the way it can be used (readers may notice the penchant I have for alliteration and commas) and having a grammatically incorrect blog title reflects this perfectly.
The theme I have at the moment has been in place for the last few months and this makes it quite unusual as the appearance of the site tends to fluctuate with my mood. I have been through at least 25% of the available themes during my time on WordPress and I’m always tweaking it.
In life I struggle with being settled as well, I don’t like calm waters and when I feel that I have everything sorted I tend to try and make waves and upheave everything to start again.
The design of the site is very ordered and I do like things to be straight and organised, but in such a way that suits me. I’m not entirely strict in being tidy, but when I am I have a very regimented sense of where stuff should be. It’s a taxonomy that makes sense to me and should make sense to others (but often doesn’t).
The fact that there is no short “bio” demonstrates that despite a few hundred posts I’m still very reluctant to talk about myself. I can do bravado very well but underneath there is a lack of wanting to open up too much. A bio would require me to tell something factual about my life and talk about the “real” me which is something I try to hide away.
What about all the posts about you, surely you do like talking about yourself? Well, some of them you should take with a pinch of salt, why let simple facts like the truth or reality get in the way of a good story? I’m not saying that everything I have written is a complete lie but names and places may have been changed to protect the guilty.
What you can see from my posts is the eclectic range of topics, and even within each four hundred word topic it tends to change from one paragraph to the next. Hopefully this represents my diverse range of interests but more likely reflects the ferret like nature I have in real life.
So there you have it, Geek Ergo Sum is either a magnificent doppelgänger of a language pushing, diverse, and organised individual or a semi-literate, unfocused egotist.
Geek Ergo Sum Ergo Sum.
In response to The Daily Post’s writing prompt: “Mirror, Mirror, On the Wall.”
Think of your blog as a mirror: what does it reveal? Consider your blog name, theme choice, design, bio, posts… what does every element tell you about yourself?
Thanks for the great idea, anupturnedsoul!
