Two legs good

In which all books are equal, but some are more equal than others.

Pigs from Animal Farm looking greedy

Four legs good, two legs better! All Animals Are Equal. But Some Animals Are More Equal Than Others. – Animal Farm, George Orwell.

This has to be one of my favourite literary quotes, or at least it is one of the few that I really remember. As an impressionable teenager it was the first time that I really understood that while an admirable goal, equality was never achievable.

It is a more poetic way of saying “Life ain’t fair”, but without the underlying tones of “shut up and stop whinging” that “Life ain’t fair” carries with it. You can struggle to create a fairer society but unfortunately there are those that will just be treated more fairly than others. Why should this be?

Whenever we have tried to create an equal society; whether the revolutions of the English, French or Russian, it always ends up with the pigs in clothes recreating the roles of the kings and tzars. Just because they have a different robes does not mean that they aren’t cut from the same cloth. The Boxers, Benjamins and Sheep are always the same.

If Karl Marx was right that revolution was inevitable (and it always is as those at the top apply more pressure than can be contained on those below) then the failure of revolution is even more guaranteed. The problem lies in that old adage about the corruption of power.

Ignoring the way that some particularly nasty types have insidiously crept into power throw such turmoil, it still has the ability to affect those who we view more ideally. Who would have thought that some guy who offered ‘Hope’ and ‘Change’ would do more to curb freedom, eliminate privacy and extra-judicially execute more people than the guy before him? I would rather have a malevolent idiot in charge than a conniving smart guy. At least W was predictable.

All it takes in an equal society is for one person to be different, they could be smarter or more greedy, and the fragile house of cards collapses. It is primed for someone to cheat the system by taking a little bit more than their share, or using those that fall below the bell curve and prey on their naivety. A few choice words to crush others who stand in your way, and while the others are fighting pick up your rewards as the dust settles.

While there are Thernadiers the students will still be sent to the barricades.

While many struggle to fight the good fight and create a fairer society for all there will always be those who believe:

Equality good, inequality in my favour better!

Ah, so you worked out the riddle. You just needed to use dwarfish and the doors to Geek Ergo Sum opened. Or perhaps you just used Google. Either way you are here, on my little corner of the Internet.
